In early 2000 the Hitachi SR8000-F1 supercomputer (see right) was installed at the Leibniz-Rechenzentrum (LRZ) in Munich, Germany. This is now the most powerful computer in operation in Europe, although its ranking in the world hasn't yet been verified.

At peak performance this computer is capable of 1.3 TFlops. This is set to double when the machine is upgraded in the second quarter of 2002. The hardware currently consists of 112 nodes, each of which contains 8 CPU's. The CPU's themselves have also been developed by Hitachi.

Use of this computer is open to academic projects throughout Germany. Amongst the planned projects are simulations of the human nervous system. There are no further details about this yet, but they will be posted here as soon as they become available.
